It’s that time again…it’s time to Relay again! So, why do I Relay?
I relay because with your donations, my bout with cancer was a very easy one. I relay because with your donations, I no longer have to chug 40 ounces of chalky contrast for my CT scans. I get to mix the new contrast liquid with flavored water. I relay so that there are more cases like mine and less cases where people have to suffer so much more than I could ever imagine.
The Mohawk Back Story
When I had to go through chemo in 2009, Jenn and I had decided that since there was a chance I could lose my hair, which at the time seemed like a big deal to me, that we would have some fun with my hair & I would go into battle with a mohawk. Never before would I even remotely thought of sporting a mohawk as I never left the house without making sure my hair was perfectly in place. Shaving my hair off to do the mohawk allowed me to have control over what happened to my hair than letting the disease & chemo have control over it which was good for me. Ironically, during this process, it let me learn an important thing. It taught me that hair is…..just hair! It doesn’t define who you are or what you will become. So if you want to have fun with it then do it. And that’s just what we did. And now with my “colored” mohawk I can just shave it off and start over. It makes it more fun and gives people even more of a reason to help the cause.
2010 Nash County Relay for Life
That brings me to last year with Relay for Life. Last year for the 2010 Nash County Relay for Life, Jenn and I decided that if we were able to raise over $500 together that I would AGAIN rock a mohawk and not JUST a mohawk, but a PURPLE one. As you know, we raised over $600 together and I rocked the purple mohawk at the 2010 Nash County Relay For Life. I was totally surprised that all of the survivors in fact loved it given the fact that usually it turned heads and causes people to stare even when it’s not dyed. Also, kids LOVE it.

2011 Nash County Relay for Life
So where am I going with all of this? I’m going to continue hawking for a cure this year. Given how we want to top last year, we’re hoping to make things more exciting and thus have changed the rules this time around. No matter how much I raise ($500 is my individual goal though) I’ll be sporting the ‘hawk and in fact have been growing it out since December. It’s also going to be a FULL mohawk from front to back so that it can top last year’s mohawk. Yeah, it gets lots of attention from everyone.

So what color should it be this year?
Well we added a couple of stipulations to help determine the color of it. The donor with the highest dollar amount donated to me will get to determine the color of the ‘hawk this year! But, the other stipulation is that it has to be a Cancer Awareness Color whether it’s pink for breast cancer, dark blue for colon cancer, lime green for lymphoma, or any other type of cancer; you’ll get to choose the color of it. I’m sure lots of you would like for it to be hot pink or lime green I know.
Deadline is 04/09/2011 so hairstylist can prepare.
Current Highest Donation Is What?
4/13 UPDATE: We have a NEW leader! Thanks to @JulieJoyce and her donation of $150.00! Her color choice would have been gold to represent Childhood Cancer had it not come after the deadline date.
2/16 UPDATE: We have a NEW leader! Thanks to an anonymous donation of $130.00 the new color choice is pink to represent Breast Cancer.
Other high donation amounts were $100.00 made by @chrisbirckhead and @Rhea. Chris’ color choice is Mets Blue AKA dark blue since he’s unfortunately a Mets fan. Dark blue represents Colon Cancer. Rhea’s color choice is red, white and blue which would represent Multiple Myeloma Cancer, Colon Cancer & Lung Cancer.
Some more high donation amounts was $50 which was made by @Alysson, @tinybobo & @Skitzzo (Orange for Leukemia).
Keep in mind that the “highest” donation doesn’t have to be a one-time donation, you can do multiple donations that in total beat out the “current” highest donation!
Also, we know not everybody can beat the current highest donation, but keep in mind that every bit helps; we welcome ALL DONATIONS!
HINT: A group of people can combine their money and have one person donate the total $ amount on the donation site and thus they would be able to beat the “current” highest donation and get color choice!
P.S. Also, on 1/28/11, my CT scan and blood work all came back clean. A year later and I’m still going strong! Thanks for all of the thoughts & prayers as well as well wishes!
